Feeling pretty excited that I’m getting this playlist up considerably earlier than last month. Admittedly, it was easier to review the songs from November than the previous month since there were far less tracks than before (sort of the nature of this beast—how many songs I add really depend on how much music I’m listening to/where I’m spending my time, etc.)
This definitely feels like an eclectic mix—a decent and strange balance of nostalgic songs and tracks that were brand new to me. Sometimes I feel silly adding older songs that I’m sure “everybody knows,” but I also realize that for some people, these could be their first time hearing them (especially if they weren’t alive when they were released).
Here’s some highlights from the list/with the backstory about how they came to be on the playlist:
“Got You Where I Want You” -The Flys. You can blame the inundation of 90s classics on this list on the fact that I borrowed my dad’s truck for a day and had access to his satellite radio. As much as I love listening to music across genres and discovering new artists, it’s inevitable that this era of music will always be my fall-back comfort. This song was one that I absolutely loved in my formative years—its moody, broody vibe stirred something in my 12-yr-old self that continues to resonate.
“Sam” -Sturgill Simpson. I’m pretty particular about the country music I love (20th century/outlaw is my tops), and don’t care too much for most artists who’ve emerged after the 90s, but Sturgill Simpson evokes an era of the genre that I desperately wish would come back. This is a short, bittersweet ditty from him that inevitably makes me choke up every time I listen to it, and pay a pretty sweet homage to a dear friend gone too soon.
“Where Did You Sleep Last Night?”-One day I’ll do a whole damn post about this beloved murder ballad and the many, many renditions that it’s inspired along the way. This rendition isn’t necessarily my favorite, but I always love finding new covers and happened to catch this one on a preview for a new show coming out.
“Ojos Del Sol”-Y La Bamba. For my final paper for my Theory-Informed Direct Practice Class, we were task with doing a Biopsychosocial Assessment for a client we’ve worked with. For those of us totally new to the world of social work, we were provided a list of TV shows to watch where we could select a character to evaluate. I decided to watch the show Gentefied, and totally got hooked. In addition to loving the story and characters, it featured so many great songs. This one especially stood out.
“Sit Down, Who’s Been Loving You”-Arum Rae. Probably my favorite song on this playlist, and I honestly can’t remember where I picked it up from. I’m not sure I’ll ever get over that bass line.
“Beautiful Things”-Benson Boone. This song has been incessantly played on the radio for the better part of the year, but it still inevitably makes me choke up. Mainly because it reminds me of my mom/that very familiar feeling of loving the things in your life and knowing that they, like everything else, are fleeting.
Those are the highlights for this month! Lemme know if there’s any songs that especially spoke to you/if there’s anything on your own list that you’re especially loving these days!
