A belated playlist for December
Got a bit behind on my playlist posts, and although it’s just about time to post up January, I still wanted to give due credit to the tunes that found me in December.
I love how these lists essentially work like diaries, providing me with an auditory record of the places I visited, media I consumed, and experiences I had that introduced me to new artists or reminded me of songs I haven’t heard in ages.
The playslists I post here are edited down “best of” collections from my larger, more unwieldy list, which I feel are the best of the larger list and most accurately represent what I was listening to that month. While I usually feel like the flow for these more curated lists usually comes together pretty easily, trying to go back and do this much later than I usually do made it a lot harder to curate than usual. (I don’t think it helps that it feels like I’ve lived approx. 1,000 years since December…)
At any rate, here’s a highlight of some of the songs on there:
“Viene de Mi” —La Yegros. It was hard to know the right song to start the playlist out with, especially because there are so many strong songs on this list, but I love the way this draws you in immediately. Definitely easy to listen on repeat.
“Benson” —The Klittens. That gritty indie fuzz sound makes my elder millennial heart sing. Music that makes me feel cool when I’m sad.
“Ego Tripping” —I don’t know what energizes me more, the beat or the words.
“Angel of the Morning” —Is probably one of my favorite power ballads, ever. I love how I will almost completely forget about its existence and then when it randomly pops up on the radio/in a show and I get to fall in love with it all over again.
PS: Anyone have any recommendations for alternatives to Spotify? It’s pretty impossible to ignore the list of issues that come with supporting that platform, but I’ve been making my music diaries on there for over a decade. Any suggestions are appreciated!
